Iraqi National Police, Sons of Iraq Turn in Caches

FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER, Iraq – The 3rd Brigade Combat Team took possession of two weapons caches after Iraqi national police from Jisr Diyala and Sons of Iraq from Salman Pak led Soldiers to the caches, March 19.

The NP reported a cache to Soldiers with 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment at the Jisr Diyala Joint Security Station after discovering it during a foot patrol near Jisr Diyala. The cache consisted of three 60 mm high explosive mortar rounds and two 82 mm mortars. The 3-1 Cav. Regt. coordinated with explosive ordnance specialists for destruction of the munitions.

An SoI group from Salman Pak turned in a cache consisting of three 60 mm mortars, 56 23 mm rounds and one OG-9 rocket to Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment. Company C and explosive ordnance specialists secured the cache for disposal.

The 3-1 Cav. Regt. and the 1-15 Inf. Regt. are assigned to the 3rd BCT, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Benning, Ga., have been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March 2007.
