FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER, Iraq – Concerned Citizens and U.S. Soldiers worked together to meet basic needs in Al Ja’ara Oct. 8, when 24,000 liters of bottled water were delivered to local residents. Soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, and the 489th Civil Affairs Battalion, escorted the shipment into town and posted guards to ensure a secure delivery.
“This was the first step in a very long process,” said Maj. John Wolfe, 489th CA. “They had a need and we came in and helped them. In the process, we got to evaluate some of the other needs of the community.”
While Concerned Citizens unloaded the water, Soldiers talked with village leaders about their concerns. The Soldiers also observed three concerned citizen’s security checkpoints.
“The Concerned Citizens started this whole process,” said Wolfe. “They have started helping themselves by protecting themselves. We hope to help them start becoming more self sufficient in other areas. So far, this process is working well in Al Ja’ara.”
The 1-15 Inf. Regt. is assigned to the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Benning, Ga., and has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March 2007.
