3 BCT Celebrates Veterans Day at FOB Hammer

FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER, Iraq - Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, took time to honor themselves and the troops that have gone before them during a Veterans Day ceremony at Forward Operating Base Hammer, Nov. 11.

The ceremony, held in front of the 3rd BCT's Headquarters, featured speeches from both the 3rd BCT commander, Wayne W. Grigsby, Jr., from Prince George's County, Md., and the chief of Kellogg, Brown and Root, Frank Sorbin, a Navy veteran from McHenry, Miss.

"I just want to say thanks to all of you, just for being veterans, for who you are," Grigsby said. "We're all veterans. We're veterans for the rest of our lives. We fall in that honored group. Our lives are changed forever and we're very thankful for the opportunities that we have and what we do here."

Sorbin, who retired from the U.S. Navy after 24 years of service, thanked the Soldiers for their service and shared his experiences as a Sea Bee.

"I am a veteran," Sorbin said. "I will always be a veteran and I honor all the veterans of the United States of America. I honor the FOB Hammer Team."

Earlier that day, the 3rd BCT held a five-kilometer fun run to celebrate the holiday. Airman 1st Class Paul Hosmanek, from Springfield, Ill., 557th Expeditionary Red Horse Squadron, and Sgt. Marsha Vega, from Columbus, Ga., Company D, 203rd Brigade Support Battalion, were the male and female winners of the run.

"It was a lot of fun," said Sgt. Brandon Ries, from Xenia, Ohio, an engineer with Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion. "There is nothing like celebrating our veterans."

The 203rd BSB, 3rd BSTB and 557th Expeditionary Red Horse Squadron are assigned to the 3rd HBCT, 3rd Inf. Div., from Fort Benning, Ga., and have been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom V since March.
